Click HERE to register for HIGH SCHOOL . Please note: High school students who don’t attend ISD are invited to arrive Thursday night for a social and spend the night in the dorm to be ready for fun on Friday and Saturday. Students can stay Thursday night through Sunday morning in the dorm. Free transportation to and from select spots in Iowa is also available as well as food and lodging throughout the weekend. Nebraska and South Dakota students can meet at an Iowa location for transportation. Students can also attend for part of the weekend; it’s not required to stay Thursday – Sunday.

Click HERE to register for ELEMENTARY & MIDDLE SCHOOL. Please note: This age group is invited to come and participate in activities during the school day on Friday (7:45 a.m. – 3:05 p.m.) with peers. These students are welcome to attend the pep rally and performance Friday evening (6:30pm – 9:00pm) if accompanied by an adult. ISD staff will not be available to supervise elementary through middle school aged students at that time. Limited overnight accommodations available for this age group (when accompanied by an adult) on a first-come, first-serve basis. Saturday athletic events are open to the public.

What’s the purpose of this weekend?

Meet friends your age throughout Iowa, Nebraska and South Dakota who are also deaf or hard of hearing. Our summer campers who do not enroll at ISD look forward to spending a week on campus all year and are often sad to leave. This weekend will be like camp because you will feel right at home regardless of your communication mode. You will never be bored, you will see some summertime friends plus make a whole bunch of new ones!

Who should attend?

***New for 2019*** Elementary and middle school students can join in on some of the events that mainstream high school students have been enjoying for the past two years. The younger students have a modified schedule.

School-aged students who are deaf or hard of hearing from mainstream schools are encouraged to attend all or even some of this weekend’s events, regardless of where you go to school. This event is especially for students who are deaf or hard of hearing if:

  • You use your voice/speak
  • Or you use sign language
  • Or you use a combination of voice and sign

I don’t sign/I don’t sign much. Will I understand what’s going on?

At Iowa School for the Deaf, you will find students just like you. Some use their voices, some sign, some use a combination of both voice and sign. Have you ever tried to text someone while talking to another person at the same time? Probably, your text wasn’t entirely clear, and maybe you left some words out when you spoke. Neither person received rich communication from you because you could not completely focus on either typing or speaking.

At ISD, we find students who rely on American Sign Language do best when we turn off our voices and use only sign language. Our students who use their residual hearing to learn do best when we don’t sign and only speak. When we sign and speak at the same time, the information gets a little fuzzy. We believe you deserve the complete picture. So, don’t worry! If you see teachers, residential counselors and others who are using sign language only, you will get the message in English, too! Extra interpreters will be with you during the weekend to help facilitate communication with students who do not sign at all or who are not fluent signers.

Can parents and teachers come?

Absolutely they can attend! As long as we have room, transportation, lodging and meals are for parents and teachers, too. Just let us know so we can plan accordingly.

What else is there to do for parents and teachers during Homecoming Day?

Homecoming is a big deal at Iowa School for the Deaf! It’s where lifelong friendships begin for our students and are quickly renewed by the alumni. The ease of communication and accessibility means no one is a stranger for long. Aside from attending our volleyball and football games, you can visit our (free) museum, stroll the campus and attend the Hall of Fame ceremony. A link to the full schedule of homecoming events will be available soon.

What are the workshops about? Who’s the presenter?

We welcome nationally-known deaf rap recording artist WAWA.  Checkout his website.

Will you really give me a ride to ISD?

Yep! Shuttles will pick up participants at pre-determined locations. Families should plan to bring their students to those locations, and we’ll take them on to ISD from there! The reverse is true on Sunday- the ISD vans will bring participants back to those locations and family will need to pick you up from there and take you home.

Really? No cost?

Really! No cost! From transportation to meals, boarding, activities and snacks, there is no cost to schools or students. Students can bring money for concessions, which will be available throughout the homecoming weekend.

So, what are your rooms and buildings like?

Those who’ve been at our camps are familiar with our spacious dorm rooms and 24-hour supervision by ISD residential counselors. Boys and girls have separate dorm buildings. Registered nurses will be staffing the health center around the clock during this weekend. Thursday night and Friday’s meals will be offered at the school cafeteria; other meals will be offered at the cafeteria or at the site of weekend activities. Wanna take a peek? Click on the numbered circles to begin your tour HERE.

What should I bring?

Dorm rooms have beds, dressers and desks. Bathrooms are located just down the hall. With unpredictable fall weather, bring comfy clothes (there will not be a dance this year- leave the fancy stuff at home!), sweatshirt, jacket, undergarments, shorts, socks, swimwear and towel, sleepwear, athletic shoes, shower flip flops if you have ’em, pillow, bedding or sleeping bag, toothbrush, shampoo, etc., and a comb.
