Family Resource Coordinator joins ISD staff

Stacey Morgan has joined Iowa School for the Deaf as its first family resources coordinator, providing services for its enrolled families. Stacey is a former ISD teacher and alumna. She was born to hearing parents and attended ISD from preschool through graduation. Her bachelor’s degree in elementary education and master’s degree in deaf education were earned from Gallaudet University in Washington, D.C.

Among Morgan’s responsibilities are:

  • Serve as liaison between ISD and parents/guardians
  • Provide ongoing communication with parents/guardians, teacher and school counselors to ensure the wellbeing of deaf children
  • Work with students individually or in groups according to what is outlined in their IEP
  • Mentor and support individual ISD families.

The family resources coordinator will support ISD families by:

  • Providing strategies and resources for them and your deaf child(ren) to support language acquisition and development
  • Providing training and/or workshops to enhance parents’/guardians’ understanding of ideas to support the language acquisition and development of their child(ren)
  • Promoting sharing of power with parents as decision-makers and help parents/guardians understand the educational system at ISD so they can become better advocates for their children’s education
  • Planning family activities at ISD; collaborate with Iowa stakeholders to provide statewide events for families with deaf and hard-of-hearing children
  • Coordinating and schedule ASL instruction for families

“I am looking forward to meeting and getting to know each and every parent/guardian in our school at ISD,” said Morgan.
