It’s back!

Save the date for March 25 & 26- Iowa School for the Deaf ‘s annual Deaf Cultural Celebration (DCC)! In another COVID-19 year where health precautions and social distancing are still a large part of our lives, our fitting theme is, “What’s Behind Your Mask?” Everyone is encouraged to dress as a superhero, or at least meet one of the many superheroes roaming through the event. Best of all? Superheroes at DCC all use American Sign Language! Children (young and not-so-young) will delight in conversing with masked heroes in their native language. Interpreters will also be present.

This event continues to be unique to the metro area, providing an all-ages friendly activity for families who have children who are deaf or hard of hearing. When a child is the only student in a school who is deaf or hard of hearing, they can feel lonely and even hide their hearing level from classmates. At Deaf Cultural Celebration, children can have conversations in American Sign Language and/or spoken English. With Deaf adult role models and the common use of American Sign Language, children will feel welcome and develop a sense of pride and belonging.

Most events will be held at the school’s Lied Multipurpose Complex, 3501 Harry Langdon Boulevard in Council Bluffs.

Friday night, Justin Perez, a visual vernacular specialist and JJ The Mime both perform beginning at 7 p.m.
