Iowa School for the Deaf American Sign Language classes have been approved by the Iowa Dept of Education as world language credit for deaf and hard of hearing students and are open to deaf or hard of hearing high school students across Iowa. With the passing of the bill in March, 2018, our classes have been approved as meeting the four-course sequence of world language credit for graduation.
Classes are 60 minutes, Monday to Friday. ISD uses the trimester system. Class schedule follows the ISD school calendar. Up to 10 students a trimester are able to enroll.
The instructor uses ZOOM – a video conferencing system that allows the instructor and students to see each other, share videos, presentations, and to converse through a message system. Students need to have a hard-wired internet connection along with a web cam. The larger the computer screen, the better. A landline connection for class is also recommended, as we have found that wireless connections have been hit and miss. No audio connection is necessary, as the class will be taught in sign language.
The only costs involved are the purchase of books. All of the books can be found on Amazon.
